Writing Goals for 2010

With the new year, it seems to be a good time to set goals and then attempt to adhere to them.
I found that a lot of people whom I asked about New Year Resolutions said how they don’t make resolutions anymore… So instead of resolutions (seriously – how long CAN one keep from eating chocholate) I figure “goal” is a better word.

Here are my professional Goals for 2010.  Maybe by writing them out and blasting them to the world will make me adhere to them:)

1. Read More. I got a ton of writing books and online workshops that I really should get through. Maybe I should append this goal and say no more buying writing books until I’ve gone through the ones I have already:)

2. Write More Steadily. I spent 2009 writing like a maniac April through August and then getting burned out and not writing anything for a couple of months. (Cold Victory was 4k a day! Yikes!) So I’m lowering my daily word count to 1.5K a day with the expectation that I’ll  move from story to story smoother and won’t have large gaps of time in between.

3. Write longer. Have I mentioned I have the Generation Y attention span? I want things NOW. This spills into my work as well – I tend to write short because I end up fizzling on a story.
My goal for 2010 is to be able to steadily write longer and longer stories, building up to a “full print length” of 90k.

4. Plot standing up. I need to figure out how to plot while walking. (Kinda a writing goal, no?) Any recommendations for plotting/walking music??

What are your goals for 2010??

  1. Great blog, Fiona! I agree, no resolutions for the year. They always fizzle and die by February anyway. Like others, I’ve started setting goals last year. My goals for 2010 are:

    1. I’d be happy not to burn out on a story. I have no problem writing the 90K book, I just have a problem sticking with it and writing it in a timely fashion. *mega frustrated sigh* I “usually”, but not always, know what I want to write, but I get bored writing it because I’m always drafting and re-drafting it in my mind. So, I’m nixing the mind-drafts this year…er…or I’m going to “try” and hopefully that’ll keep me from burning out.

    2. I want to write a little each day. This has been a problem in the past. I allow family, work and household chores to get in the way. Even if it’s just a paragraph, it’s an improvement over past years.

Hi Fi! lol. Plotting standing up. Love it. I’d recommend music that evokes a strong emotional response.

Hmmm, well I haven’t really put this into words yet, but I want to write four books this year. I agree that steady does it, because I, too, have gotten burned out when I go constantly. It can even happen when I do 1.3 K per day steady, so I don’t know. I might have to plan some breaks, but just not overextend them, which I tend to do when I’m feeling sorry for myself. :P

    Ha! That’s too funny!

I usually say, “Oh the idea came to while I was changing a diaper or doing the dishes, etc.” Your way sounds MUCH cooler!!! LOL

I’ve found that listening to books on CD sparks my creativity. I like listening to the words. I hear and see them at the same time- if that makes any sense! Then, my own words seem to fall into place.

    Hi Fi
Even tho I’m not a writer, I love reading the posts here.
I agree with your #3. I want your wonderful stories to be longer too LOL.
How about Amethyst Month instead Amethyst Moon?

Hi Gracen – thanks for stopping by! Great goals! I so know what you mean about redrafting – that always gets me as well!! And between family and work and all the other stuff, it’s always hard to prioritize writing:) Good luck with the goals in 2010!

LOL Beth – I do something very similar. I’ll burn out and then keep being “burt out” even as I have more ideas in my head… Four books this year?? Awesome Goal!!

Sarah – what kind of stuff do you listen to for creativity? If I listen to words, I can’t concentrate on anything else… Do you “see” what the words say or make up your own scenarios to fit the words?

And ideas while changing diapers? LOL! I’ve heard about ideas while driving, but diapers?? That’s a new one!

Hi Mary – always a pleasure to see you here!
LOL About writing longer:) Amethyst Month huh?? I’ll have to take it into consideration!

  6. Lacey Savage Lacey Savage says:

Great post, Fi! And you’ve set some excellent goals for yourself — I’m confident you can achieve every one. :-)

My goals for this year are simple:

    1. Write more.
    2. Write like a grown-up, in my office, every day. (Rather than sprawled on the couch like a lazy teenager when the mood strikes)
    2. FINISH what I start. (This was a serious problem for me in 2009)
    3. Follow my gut.

Hope 2010 started out well for you!
